The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, or ‘drones’ as a tool for journalism and storytelling is a relatively new field. Research at the Civic Drone Centre explores the role of UAV’s within newsgathering operations. Moving beyond simply recording and streaming video, the centre will be involved in projects such as developing new image processing applications for journalists, providing additional layers of meta data enabling them to add information and authenticate stories more accurately and quickly than previously possible.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are beginning to offer film and TV directors the chance to get amazing shots previously only possible on big budgets. Corporate video producers, photographers and advertising agencies can all add a high production gloss to their shoots without a helicopter and expensive camera mounts.
The Civic Drone Centre is developing and testing new hardware and software technology for UAV’s to make live action filming with them quicker and easier without sacrificing image quality along the way. Working with professional camera operators and movie directors to assess their specific requirements we enjoy building the tools to help them get the best takes safely and efficiently.
